The Patriotic Alliance (PA), one of South Africa’s fastest growing political parties has won Ward 56, Cape Town by-election on Wednesday with a big margin. The Ward includes Kensington, Factreton, and Maitland.
In a statement, Gayton McKenzie-led party said its win of Cheslyn Steenberg in Ward 56 in Kensington in the City of Cape Town “is another big moment in the history of the PA”.
The PA received 1321 votes, 548 more than the second-placed Patricia de Lille’s Good which received 773 votes.
It is the first time in 15 years that a ward in this city will be run by neither the DA nor the ANC.
“We do not accept the DA’s excuse that they simply missed the deadline to contest this ward. They knew that the people of Kensington are done with them and they were just too afraid to enter the fight from the start.
We have said it before and it is becoming more obvious by the minute: the DA is scared of the PA and the PA’s growth. That was why the DA sabotaged its coalition in the City of Johannesburg so that they could blame the PA for it, call us names, and hope that voters would believe the big lie that a vote for the PA is a proxy vote for the ANC.”
The PA stressed that “a vote for the PA is a vote for the PA, and we will always put the future of our children first, not the arrogant entitlement of the DA”. “The days of saying “Ja baas” and “Gee maar wat jy het, my laarnie,” are over. The people of Cape Town are ready for change. They are no longer satisfied with just accepting handouts from the DA.” The PA said people were ready to take their fate into their own hands.
The party announced that it would be in Cape Town this Saturday “to celebrate this historic moment that has shaken the very foundations of the arrogant rulers of the Western Cape”. “They can call us all the names that they always do: gangsters, criminals, thieves. But last night’s election results should teach them that insults will not save them from the PA forever.”
“We pay tribute to the hard-working ground forces who toiled in that ward to earn this moment. We know that Councillor Cheslyn Steenberg will work tirelessly to uplift his ward and repay the faith the voters have placed in him.”
