Zuma loses ConCourt challenge

By: Staff Reporter

Former President Jacob Zuma has lost his Constitutional Court application to have his contempt of court judgement rescinded.

The Apex Court ruled on Friday that Zuma had not met the requirements of a rescission application. Justice Sisi Khampepe also slapped Zuma with a cost order.

“The application for rescission is dismissed,” Justice Khampepe said.

The #FreeJacobZuma Campaign said the ruling only deepens the gross injustice that continues to be inflicted with impunity.

“There is nothing new in this arrogant judgement, in terms of the continuation of its intemperate language and disastrously defiant contempt of President Zuma’s national and international human rights. The continuing capture of our courts – even the CC – for factional political purposes continues unabated,” the organisation said.

The #FreeJacobZuma campaign said it acknowledged the courage of the two minority judgements penned by Justices Jafta and Theron, who desperately tried to salvage the integrity of our legal system and, specifically, the Constitutional Court sadly this was to little avail.

“There is no hope to secure justice for President Zuma through our captured legal system and courts. We will proceed to approach the African Court of Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR), and also challenge the Constitutional Court majority judgement in terms of the United Nations’ International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Defending the right of every citizen throughout the world of appeal, and certainly not to be imprisoned without trial,” the movement said in a statement.
